The University of Wisconsin-Madison laid off six employees after the federal government terminated grants and sent stop-work orders to the university, The Capital Times reports. The layoff notices were sent out in February and March.
Gillian Drummond, a university spokesperson, said Friday that the workers’ employment is anticipated to continue through the end of May or early June. Details about the employees’ roles and specific grants affected were unavailable.
As the school prepares for additional funding cuts, Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin last month asked all schools, colleges and divisions to “develop 5% and 10% budget reduction scenarios.”
She said vice chancellors and deans “need to review position vacancies to ensure filling them is critical,” and units should reduce nonessential spending on supplies, travel, events and equipment.
