UW Health affiliated with SwedishAmerican Health System in the Rockford, Ill., area four years ago, and now, the boards of both entities have signed a letter of intent to merge as they build their patient bases in anticipation of reduced payments from insurance companies and employers. UW Health will acquire two SwedishAmerican hospitals and a cancer center. The affiliation between the two organizations led to the development of the $40 million, standalone SwedishAmerican Cancer Center, which opened near Rockford in October. Reportedly, UW Health continues discussions with Aurora Health Care, which has 15 hospitals in eastern Wisconsin.
