Magneto isn’t the only master of magnetism.

UW Health is launching an apprenticeship program to meet the growing demand for skilled imaging professionals.

MRI usage is growing in health care, according to a UW Health statement, and MRI technologists are in high demand.

“This program is an innovative way to meet the growing demand for MRI technologists while supporting career advancement for individuals passionate about patient care and technology,” Bridgett Willey, director of Allied Health Education and Career Pathways at UW Health, said in a statement.

The new program will use hands-on clinical training with classroom instruction. Apprentices will work with experienced MRI technologists at University Hospital, East Madison Hospital, Science Dr Medical Center and 1 S Park St Clinic.

The first cohort of five students were hired internally, and instruction begins Jan. 12. A second cohort will start in August, with job postings expected in February.

“Like our other apprenticeship programs, it removes barriers to education and creates opportunities for employees to advance into higher-paying, high-demand roles,” Willey said.

Upon completion, apprentices will be eligible to sit for either the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists MRI board exams.

Graduates can then transition into MRI technologist positions at UW Health with a two-year employment commitment.
