After running up a deficit of $4.6 million, the Fundus Photograph Reading Center, a part of UW-Madison’s medical school, laid off all of its 60 employees, according to madison.com. Four of the 60 either retired or were reassigned. Medical School Dean Robert Golden apparently learned of the center’s financial problems only recently, saying he was “profoundly disappointed” that they weren’t brought to his attention sooner by those in the know. The nationally recognized eye research center could return as a smaller, more sustainable outfit in the future, according to the report.
