UW–Madison scientists have discovered a new way to capture energy from ammonia, taking another step toward a carbon-free economy, according to a Wisconsin State Journal story. Researchers in professor John Berry’s lab found that ammonia, combined with a catalyst containing ruthenium, spontaneously produces nitrogen and releases electrons that can be siphoned off. The discovery means the reaction could be used to generate electricity without releasing pollutants or heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide. The findings could provide a viable alternative to fossil fuels, enabling the achievement of a carbon-neutral economy.
