In a closed session meeting on Monday, the UW Board of Regents approved a new program that rewards chancellors for student retention, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. Most UW chancellors can anticipate increases to their base annual salary of up to 15% if they meet retention goals.
The compensation program for most UW schools — but not for UW–Madison — gives chancellors a shot at bonuses if they are able to meet the UW system and Regent presidents’ specific first-to-second-year retention targets. The targets will be set after UW determines its 10-day fall enrollment numbers.
The UW–Madison chancellor’s incentive program will reward longevity in the position. Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin will receive an additional $150,000 if she stays through June 2025, and the bonuses go up by $50,000 per year through June 2029. The UW–Madison bonuses will be funded through philanthropy rather than state or tuition dollars.
