UW Athletic Director Chris McIntosh’s new five-year contract doesn’t just include the $7.75 million from base salary and an additional compensation agreement — he also has incentives based on athletic and academic performance, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The new employment agreement went into effect last month.
According to the contract’s language, McIntosh is eligible for up to $200,000 in annual bonuses, partly tied to Wisconsin’s score in calculations of the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate, which allows athletes six years to earn a degree and accounts for transfers. McIntosh will get a $30,000 bonus for a GSR of 92% and $50,000 for 93% or better. Wisconsin last year beat the NCAA average of 90% with calculations last year at 93%.
As far as athletic performance, McIntosh’s bonus is 7.5% of the aggregate bonuses earned by Badgers head coaches during a school year. That rate is subject to review and negotiation.
The buyouts have also changed if McIntosh is fired or leaves to pursue another position. If Wisconsin fires McIntosh without cause, it will owe him 75% of the amount that remains in the contract and additional compensation agreement in liquid damages. Formerly, the buyout was a fixed sum in each year of the agreement.
The amount owed in a buyout by Wisconsin subtracts the amount McIntosh makes from a new job at another school or university. If McIntosh leaves for another job, he would now owe 25% of the remaining salary in the contract and additional compensation agreement.
