The U.S. government on Monday imposed a 17% duty on most fresh Mexican tomatoes, effective immediately, after negotiations between the two countries concluded without an agreement to avert the tax, according to the Associated Press.
The tariff’s supporters say it will help bolster the shrinking U.S. tomato industry. Mexico currently supplies roughly 70% of the U.S. tomato market, up from 30% just 20 years ago.
Opponents of the import tax, however, say it will make tomatoes more expensive for U.S. customers.
