Urban Forestry’s fall planting season began on Monday, Oct. 21, and crews will be planting 855 trees from 25 different species along city of Madison streets this fall. The variety of species was selected by the city’s trained arborists to ensure a diverse and resilient canopy that can thrive in the urban landscapes.
On May 21, Madison encountered a severe storm that caused significant tree loss around the city. Over 400 street-side trees were lost to this storm. Of the 855 trees Urban Forestry is planting, 175 of them will be to replace street trees lost in that storm. Additional replacements related to the May storm will come in later replanting seasons where appropriate.
The fall planting is expected to continue into November. Upon the conclusion of this planting season, Urban Forestry crews will return to pruning and other tree care operations through the winter months.
In the spring of 2025, there will be a new round of tree planting.
