Meriter Health Plan’s affiliation agreement with Iowa-based UnityPoint Health (fka Iowa Health System) has sparked a lawsuit from Unity Health Plans, the insurance provider of UW Health. Unity Health contends the names are too similar, and it has filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming the UnityPoint name violates federal trademark law. Unity Health Plans wants to permanently block Meriter’s new affiliation group from using the Unity moniker in areas of the state where Unity Health conducts business. Unity Health Plans, so named for the past 19 years, insures more than 100,000 people in Dane County and services 19 other counties as well. Iowa Health System adopted the UnityPoint name in April 2013.
