After failing to pass the design approval phase with the Urban Design Commission, a proposed student housing development at 126 Langdon St. is on hold indefinitely, according to a report in The Capital Times. The proposed project, designed by Chicago-based Core Spaces, is a seven-story, 124-unit apartment building following the pattern of the company’s other high-end student apartment buildings in Madison: The Hub at 437 N. Frances St. and The James at 432 W. Gorham St.

Originally brought before the UDC in October, the project led to the formation of a neighborhood steering committee which outlined concerns about the project not keeping with the historic nature of the existing neighborhood buildings, potential for increased traffic and noise, the rooftop hot tub and pool, and the proposed building being out of scale in comparison to other structures.

According to Rodney King, a representative for Core Spaces, plans to incorporate the new feedback to improve the design are underway. However, this new feedback is also causing the developer to reevaluate the use of an empty adjacent building at 142 Langdon St., originally intended to remain untouched. The request to reduce the mass of the building requires the developer to find additional space to make the project financially viable.
