Korea Zinc is considering a plan to build a $6.8 billion smelter in the U.S. by teaming up with the U.S. government and U.S. companies, Reuters reports.
The smelter would refine critical minerals in the U.S., like zinc, antimony, germanium and more in an effort to reduce the U.S.’s reliance on China.
According to South Korean newspaper Joongang Ilbo, the U.S. government and U.S. defense companies will invest 1 trillion won (roughly $680 million) in the venture. The U.S. would also acquire a 10% stake in Korea Zinc.
