The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the economy added only 142,000 jobs in August, far below the monthly average of 212,000 jobs gained over the past year. The numbers were affected in large part by a reduction of 8,000 retail jobs and a manufacturing sector that added no jobs during the month.
On the other hand, job growth occurred in the professional and business services sector, health care, and construction.
