Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows Wisconsin’s median income growing for the first time in eight years, according to an analysis by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Statewide, the median household income was $55,638, up 5.6% from 2014. Dane County’s medium income rose 5.8% between 2014 and 2015 to $65,202.

Compared to pre-recession incomes in 2007, however, Dane County, the state, and the nation still trail — Dane County by 6.2% and the state and U.S. by 3.8%.

The state’s poverty rate dropped from 13.2% in 2014 to 12.1% in 2015, the 15th lowest in the nation. Milwaukee, however, had the third-highest poverty rate (26.8%) among the nation’s 50 largest cities, behind Detroit (39.8%) and Fresno (28.4%).
