The U.S. blocked global fees on shipping emissions on Friday as an International Maritime Organization meeting adjourned, according to an Associated Press report.
Some of the largest maritime nations were deliberating on regulations to move away from fossil fuels and slash shipping industry emissions. President Donald Trump, Saudi Arabia and other countries were opposed to the global tax.
The IMO serves as the United Nations regulator for international shipping.
Saudi Arabia also gained votes from more than half of the countries to adjourn the meeting for a year. If the measure had been adopted, it would have represented the first global fee on planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions.
Shipping emissions account for 3% of the global total. IMO aims for a goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
