According to the Wisconsin State Journal, a loaded handgun was recovered from a piece of carry-on luggage at the Dane County Regional Airport on Tuesday morning. A TSA officer spotted the image of a handgun on the X-ray screen during a routine security screening around 5:30 a.m. and alerted the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. A deputy responded and took possession of the loaded gun.
The passenger, who did have a concealed carry permit, reportedly forgot the gun was in their bag. TSA stated that the penalty for a firearm violation — determined based on each case’s circumstances — can be as high as $14,950. Additionally, TSA will revoke TSA PreCheck eligibility for at least five years for passengers caught with a firearm in their possession.
TSA said this is the third firearm detected at the Dane County Regional Airport this year. Five firearms were detected at MSN security checkpoints in 2022.
