President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced plans to impose tariffs of over 10% on smaller countries that include nations in Africa and the Caribbean, the Associated Press reports. The import taxes would be placed on goods from at least 100 nations.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that the nations in question do fairly modest levels of trade with the U.S. and would be relatively insignificant for addressing Trump’s goals of reducing The United States’ trade imbalances across the globe.
The president’s latest announcement comes after he sent letters to nearly two dozen countries and the European Union over the last month that levied tariff rates set to take effect Aug. 1.
