A $12 billion farm aid package proposed by President Donald Trump would aim to support farmers who have struggled to sell their crops amid rising costs due to trade wars with other nations, inflation and other market disruptions, the Associated Press reports.
Trump was set to announce the plan Monday at a roundtable with lawmakers, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and farms who grow corn, cotton, soybeans, sorghum, rice, potatoes and wheat, and raise cattle.
More than $11 billion is set aside for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farmer Bridge Assistance program, which will offer one-time payments to farmers for row crops, the White House said.
The rest of the money will be for farmers who grow crops not covered under the Bridge Assistance program and aims to help them market the current harvest and plan for next year.
