The ink is barely dry on an unprecedented $2.2 trillion rescue package to deal with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and now President Trump has called for the passage of a $2 trillion infrastructure bill to serve as “Phase 4” of the federal government’s coronavirus response strategy.
In a morning tweet, Trump cited historically low interest rates as a reason to move forward with a historically large infrastructure bill. “With interest rates for the United States being at ZERO, this is the time do our decades long awaited Infrastructure Bill,” Trump tweeted. “It should be VERY BIG & BOLD, Two Trillion Dollars, and be focused solely on jobs and rebuilding the once great infrastructure of our Country! Phase 4.”
Officials in both major political parties have called for additional spending as the health and economic impacts of COVID-19 intensify, but other lawmakers have pushed back, urging caution against appropriating such massive amounts of money.
