President Donald Trump’s latest tariff letter says that he will raise taxes on many Canadian imports to 35%, the Associated Press reports. The move is deepening the rift between the U.S. and a country that has been an ally for decades.
The letter, sent Thursday to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, increases the 25% tariff rates Trump imposed in March. The president has expressed frustration with a trade deficit with Canada that largely reflects American oil purchases.
The new rates would go into effect Aug. 1.
