President Donald Trump on Saturday announced plans to impose 30% tariffs against the European Union (EU) and Mexico beginning Aug. 1, the Associated Press reports. The move could create a significant rift between the U.S. and two of its biggest trade partners.

The details of the planned tariffs were revealed in letters Trump posted to his social media account and come amid a recent barrage of similar letters to a variety of countries. In his letter to the EU, Trump said the U.S. trade deficit was a national security threat, while his letter to Mexico said that its efforts to help secure its border with the U.S. have been helpful but insufficient.
