Fincantieri Marinette Marine will not build four or more frigates for the U.S. Navy after the project was canceled by President Donald Trump’s administration, according to Up North News.

The canceled contract is expected to have a short-term effect on jobs there, and could be a long-term issue if the company does not get another Navy contract.

The project was worth $5.6 billion when awarded in April 2020. Constellation-class frigate warships are produced in Marinette, Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay.

Marinette Marine will finish two ships, but four to 20 had been planned for the project.

In a statement, Sen. Tammy Baldwin called the move “a blow to our national security, and a blow to our Made in Wisconsin economy.

“The frigate program is held up by the thousands of skilled Wisconsin workers, and the administration’s decision pulls the rug out from under them and puts their livelihoods at risk.”
