Nearly 1 million Trek Bikes are being recalled nationwide and in Canada after one bicyclist was paralyzed and others were injured. According to a safety recall notice from the Waterloo, Wis., bike manufacturer, the recall affects all Trek bikes sold between 1999 and April 2015 that have disc brakes and a front quick-release lever capable of expanding beyond 180 degrees.
If left open, the lever can get caught in the front disc assembly, causing the wheel to separate or suddenly stop. The issue has resulted in the recall of 900,000 bikes in the U.S. and another 98,000 in Canada.
Affected Trek bicycle owners can receive a free replacement quick release, including free installation, at their local Trek store, as well as a $20 coupon.
Customers are urged to contact their local Trek retailer or call the Trek safety and recall hotline at (800) 373-4594.
