Three candidates have emerged in the race to become Wisconsin’s superintendent of public instruction, The Capital Times reports. Campaign registrants include incumbent Jill Underly, education consultant Brittany Kinser, and Sauk Prairie superintendent Jeff Wright.
The state superintendent is elected to a four-year term, overseeing around 2,200 public schools and leading the Department of Public Instruction, which includes nearly 600 employees. Position responsibilities include:

Submitting a biennial budget request;

Determining statewide priorities on education; and

Dispersing grant funding to districts and schools.
Candidates must obtain a minimum of 2,000 signatures by Jan. 7. Voters will narrow the field to two candidates in the primary race on Feb. 18 and make a final decision April 1.
