Construction has begun on a new $9.6 million downtown theater in La Crosse, a partnership of the La Crosse Community Theatre and Viterbo University.

The 23,000-square-foot theater, to be called the La Crosse Performing Arts Center, will be located on Front Street and will seat 450 people, according to a report in the La Crosse Tribune.

La Crosse Community Theatre earlier announced a plan to raise $6.7 million to build a theater, but eventually formed a partnership with Viterbo and set a new fundraising goal for theater. The facility will cost about $3 million more than originally planned in order to add a state-of-the-art technology for university students.

The partners expect to occupy the building by January of 2013, having already raised about 75% of the cost to build the center’s shell.
