Virus-induced shutdowns resulted in the loss of 701,000 jobs in March, breaking a decade-long streak of employment growth, according to a report by the Associated Press.
The unemployment rate jumped to 4.4 percent from a 50-year low of 3.5% percent, as nearly 10 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits in the last two weeks of March.
In the past 10 years, the U.S. economy has created 22.8 million jobs, but some economists fear that the April jobs reports could show that all those jobs have been lost.
