A Gov. Tony Evers-appointed broadband task force says better data and streamlined permitting along with more funding are needed to fill the gaps of access to high-speed internet in the state, according to a report from Wisconsin State Journal. The report, delivered by the group last week, urged lawmakers to address broadband access, arguing it is the key to solve problems related to personal, community, and economic prosperity. Recommendations in the task force report include:

  • Increasing funding for broadband expansion so internet service providers can serve difficult-to-reach areas;
  • Establish a state program to subsidize the cost of internet service for low-income families;
  • Create grants to help communities plan for broadband expansion;
  • Streamline construction and permitting for expansion projects;
  • Collect internet access data from all providers to clarify who has reliable, high-speed access; and
  • Develop and fund a statewide program to assist people who are underserved and solve a wide range of internet adoption issues.
