A snowstorm across the Madison area forced some stores to close early and shoppers to stay home instead of partaking in Small Business Saturday this past weekend, but local shops are hosting a second version on Dec. 6 to make up for it.
Officially named Small Business Saturday v2 by the retailers involved, the event will act as a second chance to support local shops.
“Local businesses still rely heavily on holiday support, so we’re inviting the community to join us for Small Business Saturday v2 on Dec. 6,” Colin Murray, owner of Kylee’s Gift Cottage and creator of the Shopsmalldanecounty website, said in a statement. “It’s a second chance to celebrate local shopping without the blizzard.”
The shopping day is being coordinated through Shopsmalldanecounty. The website will highlight participating businesses, just like it did for Small Business Saturday.
According to the American Independent Business Alliance, dollars recirculate through the local economy two to four times more than what is spent at a non-local company. The alliance also found that $100 spent at a local business generates about $45 of local economic activity, compared to $14 at a chain.
Events like Small Business Saturday help remind shoppers of the importance of shopping local, if they value such businesses in their community, Murray said.
