The Rural Wisconsin Entrepreneurship Initiative from the Community Economic Development Program at UW–Madison Extension, in partnership with the Wisconsin Latino Chamber of Commerce and the Law and Entrepreneurship Clinic at the University of Wisconsin Law School, announced a professional development opportunity for Wisconsin’s businesses and service providers who work with new immigrants, migrant workers, and undocumented workers.
The event, “Immigration, Employment, and Entrepreneurship: A Legal Symposium for Wisconsin’s Workforce,” will bring together immigration and business attorneys to provide education about employment and business laws to inform their assistance of people with different visa statuses. The event will be held Sept. 20 from 8 a.m.–4 p.m. at the Latino Chamber of Commerce in Fitchburg.
The event will feature keynote speeches by Araceli Esparza, a Latina entrepreneur from Wisconsin, and Grant Sovern, national co-chair for the Immigration and Mobility Practice Group. There will be six sessions led by Wisconsin attorneys, including Jeff Glazer, clinical professor at the Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic; Raluca Vais-Ottosen, chair of the immigration practice group at DeWitt Law Firm; Freya Katkowsky, East Bridge Law Group; Jessica Slind, Pathfinder Immigration Law; and Amanda Gennerman, Pines Bach.
Organizations including Worker Justice Wisconsin, Center for Co-Ops, and Small Business Development Center will present case studies of common challenges faced by new workers in Wisconsin as they navigate the immigration process and seek to enter the labor force.
The event will cover a range of topics, including visas, life-cycle planning for businesses which employ non-citizens, the Corporate Transparency Act, Deferred Action for Labor Enforcement, and agriculture law. Attendees will have the chance to share common challenges and ask questions during break-out and question and answer sessions. Continuing legal education credit will be available for attorneys.
The event is supported by funding from Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. and the Wisconsin Department of Administration. Click here to register.
