After 50 years of operation, the Midwest Energy Resources Company is closing its coal terminal in Superior next year, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.

Coal shipments have dropped as clean energy solutions increase, and the company said coal doesn’t align with its business goals.

The coal terminal will close on June 30, with 56 employees affected.

The facility hit a record, loading 22 million short tons of coal in 2008, or half of the total amount of coal moved through the Port of Duluth-Superior. Since then, coal tonnage has dropped 75%.
