The corner of Main and Bristol Streets in Sun Prairie could soon become a hub of activity as the city works to heal the memories caused by a tragic gas explosion in July 2018 that claimed the life of firefighter Cory Barr and damaged a number of downtown businesses.
Chicago-based Lakota Group is suggesting the city consider a 60- to 70-room boutique hotel where the Barr House bar and restaurant once existed, and a mixed use development with ground-floor commercial and about 70 units of housing across the street where Glass Nickel Pizza once stood, according to a Wisconsin State Journalreport. Another 20 residential units and about 6,500 square feet of commercial space could be added in a separate mixed-use, three-story building adjacent to the new hotel.
Lakota Group’s plan also suggests the city develop more housing south of Main Street that would involve Lane and Jones Streets in the form of row houses and single-family homes. Lane Street would also be renamed “Festival Street” because of an 800-foot stretch that could be used for public events.
The Sun Prairie Plan Commission will weigh in at its Jan. 14 meeting, and the City Council could approve it on Jan. 21.
