The Sun Prairie City Council has approved a $30 wheel tax, becoming the fourth municipality in Dane County to implement such a fee, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
The tax, effective Feb. 1, will generate nearly $1 million annually to support road and transportation infrastructure maintenance. Collected through the state’s vehicle registration process, the total fee for most Sun Prairie drivers will be $143 per year, including state and county fees. This decision aligns Sun Prairie with other cities like Madison and Oregon, which also impose wheel taxes.
Rising infrastructure costs and limits on property tax increases have prompted Sun Prairie to adopt this measure as a steady revenue source for road maintenance and transportation improvements.
