A study funded by a $145,000 grant from the National Science Foundation at the Wisconsin Center for Educational Research (WCER) will investigate how online internships are influencing academic and career outcomes for students during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a WCER statement.
The six-month, mixed-methods study will look at short-term, web-based “micro-internships” and how companies are shifting their competitive science, technology, engineering, and math internships to online versions.
Unlike their traditional in-person counterparts, online internships have little documented research about benefits to students and their effect on students’ grades, job prospects, and social development.
