A new study concurs with an earlier 2009 report that Madison needs a first-class 400- to 500-room hotel to support Monona Terrace and the visitor and convention industry. The report, from C.H. Johnson Consulting of Chicago, claims the absence of such a hotel will be detrimental to the city’s convention market.
Reportedly, a 500-room hotel – eyed for the Judge Doyle Square area downtown that includes the Madison Municipal Building – would generate $78.8 million in direct and related spending and 787 full-time jobs. Additionally, it would produce $1.4 million in room taxes, $1.65 million in property taxes, and annual sales and income taxes.
Marcus Hotels, which owns the 240-room Hilton Madison next to Monona Terrace, has first dibs to build on the Municipal Building site.
