The latest StorageCafe report, which looked to identify the cities that are leading the way in addressing the housing shortage, highlighted Madison’s transformation over the past two decades. The study found that the state capital has effectively tackled its housing challenges amidst significant population growth, a thriving tech scene, and the expansion of its universities.

Notable findings related to Madison’s housing evolution include:

  • The city’s housing inventory has grown by 37% since 2005, in contrast to Milwaukee’s modest 2% increase over the same period. This growth aligns closely with Madison’s 38% population expansion.

  • Multifamily housing saw an 87% increase to 42,300 units.

  • Middle housing has expanded by 20% to 42,700 units, with townhomes and duplexes now comprising 31% of Madison’s housing stock.

  • Single-family homes increased by 28%.
