Stocks drift as traders absorb disappointing corporate reports

Wall Street headed lower in Thursday’s premarket, the Associated Press reports, with futures for the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq sliding 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.1%, respectively, before the bell.

The news comes as investors await Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s highly anticipated speech on Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Powell will speak to an annual conference of central bankers.

Walmart, often viewed as a retail sector bellwether, reported increases in second-quarter profits and sales Thursday but dipped 2.6% in premarket trading.

Beauty and cosmetics maker Coty, the owner of CoverGirl and Clairol, posted an unexpected fourth-quarter loss and sent shares down more than 20% in off-hours trading.
