State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly last week released the following statement regarding an executive order calling for the closure of the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). Closing the USDE requires Congress to pass a law repealing its creation, not an executive order.
“We have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure that every child — no matter their background, ability, or circumstance — has access to a high-quality education,” said Underly. “We cannot, and will not, allow political agendas to jeopardize the vital programs and services that so many Wisconsin families depend on.
“In Wisconsin, we will continue to stand firm and will not back down from our responsibility to educate and uplift all students. We will fight for their future every step of the way.”
During fiscal year 2025, Wisconsin received $568.2 million in federal funding through the USDE. These funds supported essential services for students across the state, including special education for children with disabilities, learning support for students experiencing poverty, mental health resources, career and technical education, and efforts to reduce class sizes.
