After health care workers were vaccinated with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, nursing home residents and staff are the next in line for vaccinations, according to an announcement from Gov. Tony Evers.
The pharmacy chains CVS and Walgreens are expected to use some of Wisconsin’s allotment of the recently approved Moderna vaccine to begin immunizing about 28,500 residents and a similar number of staff at the state’s 360 nursing homes this week. Nursing homes and assisted living facilities account for 26% of the state’s COVID-19 deaths, but make up only 1% of Wisconsin’s total cases. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services chose to use the Moderna vaccine for this program and has allocated 56,800 doses to the federal pharmacy partners to vaccinate long-term care residents and staff in this next phase.Â
