Findings of the State of the Downtown 2012 report released to Downtown Madison, Inc. show that the retail vacancy rate in the Central Business Improvement District has improved slightly, from 6% down to 5.7% over the past year, but vacant office space increased 4.1%, from 9.8% in 2011 to its current 13.9%. Over the past two years, apartment vacancies downtown decreased from 3.63% to 2.87%. Also noteworthy: The downtown population increased 7.8% between 2000 and 2011, and 85% of those living downtown are between the ages of 15 and 34.
