State lost 6,700 businesses during the recession

How costly was the recession of 2007-09? For the state of Wisconsin, the answer is very costly, as measured by the 6,700 companies that failed and 163,355 jobs that were lost, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

According to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the biggest drops in jobs came in construction, down 24.2% in the four-year span, and manufacturing, off 15.6%.

The number of business establishments fell 4.6%, to 139,554 from 146,286, while the number of paid employees dropped 6.6%, to about 2.3 million from nearly 2.5 million.
