Citing multiple alleged violations of consumer protection laws, the state Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Countryside Meats LLC, a door-to-door meat sales company in Stevens Point, according to the Stevens Point Journal.
The suit, filed in Portage County Circuit Court, charges that Countryside misrepresented to clients the price per pound of meat and the quality and type of meat. It also accuses the company of failing to provide refunds when customers requested them.
According to the lawsuit, the alleged practices date back several years. In April of 2008, following customer complaints, the state Department of Trade, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection issued an assurance of compliance against the company, but the violations allegedly continued. The Better Business Bureau lists 45 complaints filed against Countryside in the past three years alone.
The DOJ wants Countryside to be ordered to refund customers and pay forfeitures of up to $10,000 for each violation.
