WEC Energy Group announced that it will stop burning coal by 2035 and transition to natural gas, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. The decision impacts Madison Gas and Electric, a small-share owner in WEC’s Elm Road Generating Station. MGE said the move takes the utility closer to its goal of producing carbon-neutral electricity by 2050. MGE stopped burning coal and switched to natural gas over one decade ago at the Blount Generating Station. Alliant Energy said the company plans to retire the state’s second-largest coal plant near Portage by 2025.
