State Sen. Jeff Smith, D–Brunswick, and Rep. Joe Sheehan, D–Sheboygan, recently introduced legislation to exempt over-the-counter medication from sales and use taxes statewide, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.

The bill would create a state and local sales and use tax exemption for the sale of over-the-counter drugs.

Both lawmakers said the move is in response to rising medication costs.

The bill was circulated to members of the Legislature on Tuesday, and has a Thursday deadline for co-sponsorship.
