Startup activity lagging in Wisconsin

In a recent analysis, the startup formation rate in Wisconsin is 5.95% compared to a national average of 8.13%, according to a Roofstock report. The analysis calculated the trailing five-year average startup formation, which is defined as the number of new firms in a given year divided by the total number of firms. New startup businesses in Wisconsin account for 11.65% of new jobs created per year, but out of all of the U.S. states, Wisconsin has the sixth fewest startups. Key findings from the report about Wisconsin include:   

  • Startup formation rate: 5.95%; 
  • Annual startup formations: 5,780; 
  • Annual new jobs created by startups: 32,416; and 
  • Jobs created by startups as a percentage of all new jobs: 11.65%. 

Key findings from the report about the entire United States: 

  • Startup formation rate: 8.13%; 
  • Annual startup formations: 423,148; 
  • Annual new jobs created by startups: 2,285,251; and  
  • Jobs created by startups as a percentage of all new jobs: 14.12%.
