The Starbucks Workers United union has authorized a strike that may begin on Red Cup Day, a promotion where customers receive a reusable red Starbucks cup as a collectible, according to CNBC. It is typically a busy sales day.
The union wants to reach a collective bargaining agreement with Starbucks by Nov. 13, Red Cup Day. A strike is planned for nearly 25 cities if a deal isn’t reached.
Talks between the union and Starbucks stalled late last year. A mediation was entered into in February, and an economic package from Starbucks was voted down by the union in April.
The strike authorization won 92% of the votes. The union is seeking improved hours, higher wages and a resolution to unfair labor practice charges.
If the strike moves forward, it will coincide with Red Cup day. The strike would also disrupt the chain’s holiday season.
