In late 2013, Office Depot announced it would acquire Office Max, and now Staples is planning on purchasing Office Depot for $6 billion. The move would create 4,000 stores nationwide in a bid to compete against the likes of Walmart, Target, and Amazon, according to reports. Staples had already announced it would close more than 200 stores in 2015, and Office Depot says it will close 135.
Office Depot/Office Max has a total of four locations in Madison. Staples has two.
