A U.S. District Court in Madison ruled in favor of 1,400 nurses who were not paid for meal breaks when they had to stay at St. Mary’s Hospital on call. As a result, the hospital has agreed to pay $3.5 million to settle the class action lawsuit. Nurses who worked at St. Mary’s between Aug. 23, 2009 and April 13, 2013 will receive an average of $1,625.50, for a total of $2.3 million. Most of the remainder will go to attorneys’ fees.
