Middleton-based Spectrum Brands saw profits soar in its most recent fiscal quarter, which ended Jan. 3, the company reported this week. The company pegged a large chunk of its $73.6 million in profits — on $1.22 billion in sales — on robust battery sales.
Spectrum said global battery sales were $252.6 million, up from $240.2 million in the first quarter of 2015.
Overall profits for the quarter were up from the $49.8 million the company made during the same period a year ago.
Spectrum’s battery division is based in Middleton and includes factories in Portage and Fennimore. In a press release the company indicated new alkaline business at certain retailers and the timing of holiday shipments contributed to the higher numbers.
