Madison’s special Lake Monona Waterfront Ad Hoc Committee on Monday unanimously approved a draft master plan that redesigns the Lake Monona Waterfront, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The plan will be introduced to the City Council in January, after which it will be reviewed by multiple committees, with a final decision anticipated in late March or early April.
With final tweaks complete, the plan from Sasaki of Denver includes a broad plaza and stairway linking East Wilson Street to an amphitheater and concession building on the waterfront; a bike and pedestrian underpass between Broom Street and North Shore Drive that would provide entrance to the park; and a large dock and overlook with views of the Capitol.
It also features several new lake access points, separate bike and pedestrian paths, places to fish, wetland and water quality improvements, spots for entertainment and dining, a “canopy walk” amid Olin Park’s treeline, and opportunities for artistic expression and honoring the Ho-Chunk Nation.
