Due to an administrative error, some Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) employees are having to pay more in taxes than expected, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The district reportedly used outdated forms to calculate tax withholdings by mistake.
Jennifer Trendel, MMSD’s human resources director, said in an email to employees that the error resulted from system updates that “inadvertently excluded too much income from taxation.” Workers without a recent W-4 form on file are believed to have been particularly affected as paperwork from before 2020 used different tax calculations.
Trendel said that, moving forward, tax tables will be reviewed for accuracy. Edell Fiedler, MMSD’s spokesperson, said the district is assuming that all 6,000 of its employees were affected by the error, although a variety of factors can impact tax liabilities, including withholdings. Fiedler said “immediate steps” have been taken to “prevent this error from happening again.”
